The Abbottabad district, located in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan is spread over an area of 1,967 square kilometers (179,654 ha). According to 1998 census the district is home to 928,000 people, with a density of 470 persons per square mile. The same census put the urban component at18.6%, and the rural one at 81.4%. Predominantly mountainous and rugged, the district’s mean maximum and minimum temperatures are usually 23 `C and 11`C respectively. Placed in the active monsoon zone, the district is heavily dependent on rain and experiences high level of humidity. Abbottabad is bordered by Mansehra district in the North, Muzaffarabad and Rawalpindi districts in the East, the Haripur and Rawalpindi districts in the South and Haripur district in West.
